About webknossos.org
Our story began over 12 years ago when the Helmstaedter lab at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research reached out to us at scalable minds. The Helmstaedter lab was working on Connectomics projects to understand the neural wiring of the mammalian brain, which involved handling multi-terabyte 3D electron microscopy image datasets. To extract insights from this vast amount of data, collaboration among many annotators was essential. However, with no online tools available, the lab had to send out hard drives to distribute the work among annotators.
