Tohono Chul’s story is rooted in a simple but enduring idea: that the Sonoran Desert is worth preserving, sharing, and protecting for generations to come. Richard and Jean Wilson, who owned the land that would eventually become Tohono Chul, resisted growing development pressures and chose instead to preserve their desert property for the benefit of the community. On April 19, 1985, that vision took shape with the founding of Tohono Chul. What began with the Wilsons’ commitment to protecting this corner of the desert has grown into the vibrant community resource Tohono Chul is today, connecting people with the nature, art, and culture of the Sonoran Desert.
