Para la Construcción del Canal Interoceánico de Panamá, se inician los trabajos con la primera compañía francesa que instaló los primeros limnímetros y se realizaron aforos en el Río Chagres. El 15 de abril de 1899 se estableció la estación del río Chagres en Alhajuela y fue la única registradora de niveles y estimados de descarga diaria de agua en lo que era conocido como “la parte alta del Chagres” hasta 1929.
