第五福竜丸は 1954 年 3 月 1 日、マーシャル諸島ビキニ環礁でアメリカがおこなった水爆実験により被ばくした静岡県焼津港所属の遠洋マグロ延縄漁船です。爆心地より 160 キロ東方の海上で操業中、突如西に閃光を見、地鳴りのような爆発音が船をおそいました。やがて、実験により生じた「死の灰」(放射性降下物)が第五福竜丸に降りそそぎ、乗組員 23 人は全員被ばくしました。 その後、第五福竜丸は放射能がへるのを待って東京水産大学(現・東京海洋大学)の学生の航海の練習船「はやぶさ丸」となりました。
