Called “moving everyday sculptures, artfully cast in naturalness” (Luzerner Zeitung, Switzerland), Ayako Kato, a 2023 United States Artist Fellow, is a kinetic philosopher/poet and contemporary choreographer/dancer originally from Yokohama, Japan. Most recently, she collaborated with pianist Mabel Kwan to perform for 2 x 4 at Constellation Chicago. In 2025, she was invited to her old nest, the University of Michigan’s Dance Department to teach and perform, and to the Center for Japanese Studies to give a talk on Fūryū, the way of wind in Japanese, or the beauty of being as it is.
