About antark.net
A trap-jaw ant hunts with its mouth cocked. It holds its long mandibles wide open, latched against a catch and primed by hair-trigger sensors, and when they fire, they fire faster than any other animal movement ever recorded. In Odontomachus the strike can take as little as a third of a millisecond, the jaw tips snapping shut at metres per second; the same blow can even hurl the ant itself somersaulting backwards out of danger. Remarkably, the mechanism evolved independently several times over, in Odontomachus and Anochetus, in the tiny leaf-litter Strumigenys, and in others, the same piece of biological engineering reinvented again and again.
